Secondary Technology Teacher of the Year
The 2007-2008 Secondary Technology Teacher of the Year is Catherine Pena.
Catherine Pena has been teaching for 11 years. Currently, she teaches 6th grade Mathematics at Brown Middle School. Mrs. Pena believes that today’s youth are technology minded and old-fashioned teaching techniques are not sustaining their attention, she believes it is her job as a classroom teacher to integrate technology into the instruction to meet the needs of today’s learner. It is also her desire for her students to be successful and engaged in the learning process, and integrating technology helps tremendously.
Her favorite technology tool is the interactive white board. Her and her students use the ACTIVBoard, document camera, graphing calculators, united streaming, classroom response systems (clickers), and various software programs each day.
She believes that technology stimulates learning, makes learning a positive experience, and encourages good behavior (she has little or not classroom disruptions)
Ms. Pena has spent many hours learning new ways to integrate more technology and believes her efforts have paid off – her students are having fun while learning math, they are excited and best of all they are successful. Using technology for teaching and learning impacts her classroom in a very positive way.
