Teacher Spotlight

Our featured teacher is Ms. Linda Gonzalez from Lincoln M.S. Ms. Gonzalez currently teaches social studies and serves as the department head for the Humanities Department. She manages her own website where she posts the complete Texas history book along with homework assignments for each chapter. She integrates the iPad in all her daily lesson plans and students use a variety of iPad Apps to complete assignments and access her classroom page. Click on the video to learn more.

How are students using their iPad?

Many McAllen ISD students have had their iPads for almost a year and have now become proficient users of various apps.  Most students have their favorite go-to educational apps, as well as other personal apps, and have shared some of those with us.  We would like to thank McAllen ISD 2012-2103 Technology Teacher of the Year, Kristi Rogers, for interviewing Garza Elementary students so we can have a better understanding of how students are using their iPads for educational use.

Take a moment to hear straight from these remarkable students about how the iPad has changed the way they learn. The Educreations app is by far one of the favorite apps for Garza Elementary students across all levels.  You can find it in the app store and you can also learn more about the app at http://www.educreations.com.

Stimulating Curiosities

Aime La Fevers has been a science teacher at Lamar Academy for more than a decade.  She credits her mother with her love of science.  Her passion for science led her to a degree from the University of Texas and later to becoming a secondary science teacher with McAllen I.S.D.
Aime was always an exceptional student but was frustrated by teachers who only lectured to the class for the whole period rather than teaching in an engaging and motivating fashion.  Aime vowed that when she became a teacher, she would not bore her students by standing in front of them all period talking about concepts that she knew they needed to figure out on their own.
Now Aime has embraced the district’s TLC3 Program for putting iPads in the hands of students.  She feels that the iPad provides a world of opportunities to help students to initiate their curiosities.  She has dedicated herself to finding ways to use student’s curiosities to make them more self sufficient when it comes to their learning.

Instructional Technology Updates

TLC3 Registration

19,759 Students have been issued a device as of October 18, 2013.

Please share the following information with your students:

  • Students that HAVE a district device or WANT a district device to be issued to them, must complete TLC3 Registration and, if necessary, pay online with a debit or credit card via ZippSlip.
  • Parents may opt to select the Security Deposit or the Replacement Benefit Program.  If parents paid for the 2011-2012 Replacement Benefit Program, this program will end Thursday, October 31, 2013.  Parents must complete TLC3 Registration and select the Replacement Benefit Program option before Thursday, October 31, 2013 to ensure your device is eligible for benefits under the new term.

TLC3 Distribution:

9th-12th Grade students will be issued a device at their campus.

Parents of PreK-8th grade students may pick up device(s) at:
Location: Facilities, Maintenance, and Operations Training Room Dates/Times: October 18, 2013 to November 18, 2013 (Mondays 1:00PM-5:00PM and Fridays 8:00AM - 12:00PM)

Blackboard Engage:

As you know, McAllen ISD migrated to a new web hosting service called Blackboard Engage (formerly known as Edline).  Two main reasons for migrating is that SchoolFusion was purchased by Blackboard Engage and the Blackboard Engage solution supports the use of mobile devices such as the iPad and iPod Touch.

Parent Activation Codes were emailed October 10, 2013.  Students Activation Codes are provided by individual teachers.  Teachers can print parent and/or student activation codes by logging in to your Blackboard Engage account and from the Edline menu, selecting Tools, Manage Class, Print Activation Codes.

Blackboard Engage provides unlimited online storage space for you and your students called My File Locker (called My Web Locker for students).  This feature eliminates the need for floppy or flash drives, allows for file transfer between school and home, and keeps your files safe until they are ready for use.
