The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) offers high quality programs of international education to a worldwide community of schools. The three programs for students aged 3 to 19 help develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world. The three programs offered by IB are the Diploma Programme (16-19), the Middle Years Programme (11-16) and the Primary Years Programme (3-12).
The Diploma Programme
MISD opened the door to its IB Diploma Programme in September 2001 and celebrated its first graduation in May of 2003. The Diploma Programme, an internationally recognized program, is a rigorous pre-university course of studies that meets the needs of highly motivated high school students in their junior and senior years. The International Programme high quality curriculum aims to encourage critical thinking by the study of traditional disciplines while encouraging an international perspective.
MISD’s Diploma Programme is housed at Lamar Academy and serves students from the district’s three high schools. Students who successfully complete the program receive college credit as well as an international diploma that is recognized by prestigious universities throughout the world.
MISD has expanded its IB program by implementing the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Primary Years Programme (PYP).
The Middle Years Programme (MYP)
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16.
This period, encompassing early puberty and mid-adolescence, is a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development and requires a programme that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts.
Presently MISD has 4 MYP candidate schools. The candidate schools are Cathey Middle School, De Leon Middle School, Travis Middle School and Lamar Academy.
Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed for students aged 3 to 12.
PYP is a transdisciplinary programme of international education designed to foster the development of the whole child. PYP focuses on the total growth of the developing child, touching hearts as well as minds and encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development.
The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children.
Presently MISD has 6 PYP candidate schools. The candidate schools are Bonham Elementary, Fields Elementary, Garza Elementary, Gonzalez Elementary, Milam Elementary and Rayburn Elementary.
Also MISD has 2 PYP perspective schools, Perez Elementary and Sanchez Elementary.
